Constructing a stone stairway

Sometimes a set of stairs would be helpful in getting from one part of the garden...

to the next.

Shrubs and AC units don't get along vey well, and shrubs alone don't really solve anything on their own, so...

Why not construct a stairway which provides easy access from front to back garden, makes you WANT to walk outside and also creates curb appeal?

By placing the stairway next to the house...

the garden provides privacy as you take your daily walk and the stucco is kept clean and dry when it rains.

Slant the stairway away from the house foundation.

Even with curved steps, make sure the drop is even.

Usually 6" is a good amount for a step riser.

In this design, stone and brick were combined to create an Old World French Style feeling.

The area next to the stairs...

is perfect for a small Herb Garden Terrace.

Planting herbs on a terrace is fun and easy in well drained soil.

Mmmm...smell the lavender?

This homeowner wanted a private back garden and curb appeal from the street.

So, a design was drawn

beds were prepared using soil amendments, peat moss, manure and compost.

the largest plants were moved into place first

Planting was much easier with prepared beds and plan in hand.

During planting (before arbor and pathway) to back garden.

Now there's a beautiful view from the street and private entrance to the back garden.

Mission accomplished!

My Sweet Surprise

A good friend asked us to meet up for coffee the other day, just a nice, before Christmas, take-a-break kind of coffee time together. So, off we went to The Perch to meet her.

After we sat down, a familiar face walked by. Hmmm... that looked like my son Jack,

(I thought to myself.) NAH! He's all the way on the other side of the planet in Rwanda.

It couldn't be Jack.

BUT, IT WAS!!!

His smile was HUGE and needless to say, it was a SWEET, SWEET SURPRISE!

A lot of planning across the miles between our friend, Nancy, and Jack had finally paid off. Thanks Nancy, for stepping out of your normal comfort zone and taking the chance to make it happen! I've never been so pleasantly surprised.

It was so nice to take a walk in the Tennessee sunshine with Jack again and hear about the important job that he and his team are working on together in Africa.

A lot has been happening in his world and walking and talking is our way of catching up with each other. It is something I definitely miss when he is far away.

When I see Jack, I feel as if the sun has just come out.

and it always makes me want to sing!

Winter Garden Maintenance

Water plants, especially evergreens, before the ground freezes.

Clean up planting beds by raking and take debris to composting area.

Repair soil by tilling in organic amendments such as compost and dehydrated manure.

Apply winter mulch to perennials and roses after a hard frost when ground begins to freeze.

Prune trees and shrubs in winter when the branches are without leaves.

Evaluate last year's garden and decide what changes need to be made.

Draw garden plans on paper for next Spring.

It will be here before you know it!

BISON MEADOW NASHVILLE TENNESSEE

This story is for my daughter, Gillian, who is far, far from home this Christmas.

A few years ago, Gillian worked at Cheekwood in Nashville. She would drive to work and when she got home at night she would tell me all about the beautiful drive to work and what she had seen along the way. Come to think of it, she still makes the most of her journey. You can follow her through China on her way to and from work there.

I loved hearing her tell me about her drives.

So, I thought maybe Gillian (living in China) would like to enjoy some familiar sites from my drive to work now.

This piece of earth has been protected and cared for by the City of Forest Hills. It started several years ago with a lot of careful and diligent yew training.

This is what it looked like when Gillian saw these guys.

Growing up is hard to do. This is an adolencent Bison. But wait...

Look at him now!

Summer is ending and Christmas is coming...

and... I think they did this for you, Gillian.

Building a Feng Shui Garden Con't.

As you may recall, this summer was the beginning of a garden project to transform a large hillside into a peaceful paradise.

Craftsman Fence, gate and arbor

The garden for this lovely Craftsman Cottage in Green Hills was such fun to draw.

Incredible TN Stone and natural materials were used throughout the project and were already on site when I began the drawing for the garden.

The homeowners were careful to follow Craftsman Style using details like natural materials, earthy colors and comfortable relaxing areas inside and out.

On the side of the house, a fence was designed to carry out the Craftsman Style.

The addition of a fence creates outdoor space to be utilized...another Craftsman rule, no wasted space!

Simple lines.

Hybrid Builders built this adorable cottage. All woodwork was crafted by Jason Crook.

It makes my job lots of fun, working with professionals who really care about the project.

Last week I went to draw a design and had one of those days where I just looked at a plant and my mind went blank. Ever have one of those days?

I knew what it was, but couldn't quite come up with the name in my head. I know if I show you the photo of this plant in bloom, you will say, "Oh yeah, I knew it was that!" Just like I did.

Cicada damage...now what?

Have you noticed more dying leaves and brances than normal in your garden?

Remember the cicadas this summer? The female cicadas have been busy cutting slits in small twigs or branches and have deposited their eggs there.

The ends of affected branches will brown and wilt, a symptom called flagging.

If your plants are small enough, you can prune and destroy young twigs that have been damaged by egg laying.

Large, established trees can withstand considerable flagging. So, no worries there.

Healthy again!

Hummingbirds love trumpet vine

Trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) is perfect for our hot summers. This variety is called 'Madame Galen'. And... it attracts hummingbirds.

Many other plants are a favorite stop for hummingbirds. This Salvia 'Greggii' grows well throughout our summers. Just cut off spent bloom stalks and it will bloom over and over again.

Hyacinth bean vine (Dolichos lablab) LOVES this heat. Easy to grow from seed. Plant in Spring, in a sunny spot next to a fence or trellis. Mulch and water. Blooms begin at onset of summer and carry on until frost.

Beginning a Craftsman Garden Design

First things first, look at the style of the Craftsman home. Basic principles of the Arts and Crafts house are also followed by tying it to the garden that surrounds it.

The beginning design of the Craftsman Style Garden should be done in a very ordered and geometric format, with paths and plantings within rectangular, triangular, or circular boundaries.

Then, draw the large shrubs and trees in strategic locations like any indentions or eaves of the house as well as creating balance with them on the perimeter, being careful not to block the view of the front doot from the street. Vines trailing up a trellis and over an arbor will create the feeling of making the garden and house feel like one space. Varieties DO matter when it comes to plant choice.

The lower part of the preliminary sketch (shown in white) recommends installation of a retaining wall, designed to secure the steep slope.

Here, the slope is excavated to prepare for a retaining wall.

Stone is delivered...

and moved into place.

A good day's work, I'd say.

The retaining wall plantings should be drawn in moderately large mass and allowed to grow into one another and spill over the stone walls and grow into cracks.

Another detail in the design is to build a handcrafted fence with a gate and arbor that allows passage to outdoor rooms. In this case the pathway leads through a gate to the back garden space.

Great day for peace

It seems an appropriate day, being Gregor Mendel's birthday, to mention a new book by a very interesting and caring monk called Isaac McDaniel. If you are like me, you probably don't come across the opportunity to fraternize with brothers of the cloth very often and probably wouldn't know what to talk about with one.

Reading this book, by this most gentle, insightful and peaceable man is like sharing a walk down the road with a very good friend. He just happens to be my cousin.

When I moved to America as a teenager it seemed a very discomforting place, different from small village Africa. Our parents drove us to our first family re-union, in our case, union.

In front of us were dozens of new faces we were supposed to know...and LOVE?

Frankly it was frightening.

There were a couple of people who took time away from the excitement of seeing familiar relatives and showed empathy and concern.

They seemed to understand what it was like to have experienced the pain of 'not belonging' and cared that it did not happen to us.

Brother Isaac was one of those people. His book is worth reading.

Another warm set of open arms was Georgeanne. Her story is for another day!

Over the years I have come to know more of my relatives a little better and it is nice to belong to a family of interesting, strong spirited and idealistic characters.

Small House Garden Design Revisited

This was the small house before the flood. We were all sorry to hear that it sailed away never to be seen again... However, there is a good side to this story.

This homeowner did not give up. Once the new house was under construction

A Garden Design was drawn to give the new Tudor Style house the same cosy feel as before.

The height (off the ground) was an issue that needed to be addressed. The Garden Design includes a few ways to visually add charm and curb appeal.

First, the design recommends the stairs to the front door enter from the side instead of straight up. Then they take a few turns and slowly rise up two levels (shown below).

The Garden Design (first phase) foundation planting under the windows consists of shrubs that reach 6-8' in height at maturity. (minimal trimming) The trees on either side will reach the height of the gutters.(This is where variety matters !)

Color is highlighted in every season by the choice of shrubs as well as evergreens for winter structure.

Notice the Tudor details such as: Style and color of shutter, steep roof pitch and the rounded door. The bench is a reminder of the home that once stood here and makes a great a focal point for this new garden. It also helps to balance the garden view until the shrubs have a chance to fill out.

The Garden Design (second phase) recommends planting a hedge near the street.

An arbor and gate narrow the view to 'cosy up' the property. This is also another suggestion to make the house feel grounded.

Keep checking back as phase two begins.

A Feng Shui garden begins

Breaking rocks in the hot sun is a great title for song but not easy for the ones actually doing it.

A clip from this Feng Shui Garden Design shows plans for a Tai Chi lawn with birdhouse alongside the greenhouse on one of the terraces. Extensive excavation will take place this summer to create the terraces.

Day 1: As the day progresses more and more rock is uncovered.

Some gardens are easier than others to prepare for planting. This is not one of them!

As always, the garden preparation includes topsoil, manure, peat moss, soil conditioner and compost added to each terrace after excavation of each level is constructed.

Then plants that are conducive to growing on a hill will be planted to complete each level in the Style that complements the homeowners taste.

Ground covers like candy tuft (Iberis sempervirens) ajuga, euonymus coloratus and creeping phlox will grow between rocks for color and interest.

Sedum also grows well on a hillside.

In a shady situation over time, moss will grow on rocks.

Ferns will be introduced ( in shade) along with other ground covers. Waterways will be constructed into the retaining wall structure to direct heavy rainwater away from the residence on lower level.

Other good ground covers that fill cracks are ivy (Hedera helix)

and vinca (v. minor)

Garden Design for a Southern Garden

It has been a very busy year so far for designing Southern Style gardens.

What makes a Southern garden different, you say?

Well, first of all, fragrance. Southern climates allow us the luxury of growing many scented plants well. Just think of magnolias...many perfumes have capitalized on their delicious aroma.

Each season should be well represented by blooms or striking foliage which present a different sensation such as, mahonia's intoxicating fragrance in February...

followed by wisteria's delicate scent in March.

A Courtyard in a Southern garden allows outdoor seating in a private setting to relax and enjoy the long, pleasant months out of doors.

Adding a partial wall or fence with a gate will generate interest. It makes a walk from the car much more fun for guests.

Windowboxes are a great way to add color with annuals or herbs for the kitchen AND allow you to remain friends with bunnies. (Bunnies are cute, but...)

Just remember, a bench is always a great addition to any style garden.

The bench you choose for your garden should say something about your style.

Why not make your garden edible?

Make sure your Kitchen Garden Design has pathways to make harvesting and maintaining easier.

Locate it in plenty of sunshine.

and build a cool potting area close to water outlets (I am not trying to be hip. I am referring to temperature.)

Utilize every available space by adding a trellis, arbor or fence for peas, grapes or other climbing plants.

Draw in a bench or some outdoor seating while you are at it. Working in any garden can wear you out. Take a break now and then and Remember, ... this is fun!

Deutzia-a favorite for flower arrangers

Around the third week of May, Clarksville TN used to hold it's annual Flying High Auction. Favorite blooms used in the flower arrangements for this event were from the deutzia shrub. The flowing racemes and long lasting blooms are usually at their peak during the month of May here in Middle Tennessee and provide a stunning and inexpensive display, if you happen to grow a deutzia in your garden, that is.

*After many years of frigid, wet, weather blowing in on everyone in the classic white tents, Flying High was permanently moved to the first week in June. I am not sure what they use for flower arrangements now....perhaps roses?

Mother's Day Gift

Over the years at the garden nursery we found the number one Mother’s gift to be a rose bush, followed closely by a birdbath or hanging basket. These are all lovely gifts and are well received by the looks of things. Each year the same folks return to repeat their loving ritual.

My Mother was different from the cookie cutter version. She was not a gardener, nor would I describe her as a homebody. Give her a downtown New York Apartment and she would have been happy. She loved the hustle and bustle and was happy on the edge of the excitement, being part of the conversation, having a voice in solutions to the world’s most complex problems, loving the debate.

For 25 years she pushed the parameter at Vanderbilt University creating a role of excellence for others to follow. She made her mark and I am very proud to be her daughter.

Later in life my parents moved from their lovely home with it’s green manicured lawn and garden full of flowers to a snappy, uptown flat in Nashville.

My Mother, the night owl, LOVED her new nest! So, now that they lived in a home without the requisite place to hang her annual petunia basket, what could I give Mom for Mother’s Day?

I guess she finally got what she really wanted all along…a big hug and to hear those four endearing words with a smile..."I love you Mom!"

Last year my husband carefully pruned out crossing branches.

This year we have been rewarded with gorgeous blooms this Spring.

What does GREEN taste like?

What could be better than walking in a beautiful garden early in the morning, picking fresh vegetables and watching them turn into your morning's juice? Well? drinking it, I suppose. That is exactly what I did this St. Patrick's Day in Gillian and Mark's Charleston kitchen garden and I loved every minute of it!

Mmmm... fresh juice made with parsley and ginger straight from their garden. I don't know what else was in it. All I know is that it tasted great and I felt pumped for the whole day.

Their top o' the morning breakfast turned out perfectly with Mark's french toast ( made with Gillian's barnie bread) and muscadine syrup.

By the way, green tastes really fresh. And, yes...I can also make up my own abbreviation for texting...NET (not enough time!)

The Five Minute Walk

A five minute walk through your property could reveal the areas that need a little TLC.
Maybe that dead shrub could just be pulled out this year, or the front door could be brightened up with a colorful coat of paint?

Is there a spot for a bench?

Are you always fussing at people for walking through your garden beds? A path of stones, brick or even cypress mulch would solve that problem. It might even make you sit and stay a while.

Figgy Duff

Hmm...Figgy Duff. I don't know why that came to mind today. Could be the cold... could be that I was reading my daughter, Gillian's blog today about how to prune figs. Gillian takes care of some of the beautiful gardens and windowboxes in downtown Charleston, SC. I know it is hard, hard work, but wouldn't that be fun for a day? You can read here what she says about figs.

By the way, a surprise to me...Figgy Duff doesn't have anything to do with figs. Hah! If you read what Barry says, in Newfoundland, where Figgy Duff and Barry both come from, they use raisins. (They call raisins, figs. Hmmm, why not?) I've heard really good things about people from Newfoundland. It is on my bucket list of places to visit and possibly stay awhile, though I think I'll wait until summer.

Charleston Garden Tour coming up soon

Small house begins life again after May flood

Remember The Small House? It was a very popular post last year, I guess because it was so small and a little curb appeal went a long way to regain it's charm.

This is where it all started...

A site visit with the homeowner gave me lots of food for thought. My first question on a curb appeal drawing is, " What immediate steps can we take to make the whole picture fit the homeowner's style and bring out the intended architectural character of the house?"

The design draws attention to the areas that need immediate attention.

The stepping stones are not in scale with the house. They must go!

So a trench is dug to incorporate a new stone walkway.

The Cottage style of the house lends itself to a meandering pathway bordered by an herb garden and bench seating on one side...

and...The added charm of a new awning and a fresh coat of red paint on the door (below) help to make it inviting.

There is also cafe seating on a small stone patio which balances the front view. Not only does this look cosy, but one side is shady and the other in sun. A perfect place to relax any time and grow herbs and perennials with different requirements.

Now... that is not the end of the story. Yes, it was a very happy ending until May 2010. We all know what happened that dreadful day in Nashville...the flood came through our city with force and The Small House was one of the ones to go with it...HOWEVER,

This little house is resilient. It is being built again with new hope and vision for the future. A new design is being drawn for the garden and as with many trials and tribulations The Small House will stand even taller and stronger than before. Stay tuned!

Year of the Rabbit

Keep fresh water everyday in your birdbath, even through winter.

Be sure to clean out your bluebird houses after each brood.

Design a place for a bluebird house in your garden. Make sure there is clear visibility for your birds' protection and you will have many broods per season.

This Christmas was incredible. All of our children were here from all parts of the world, representing all stages of independant life, sharing different recipes, views and goals in their lives.
When I get a little emotional about my children going away again, I think about what my mother used to say to us. Her philosophy followed Kahlil Gibran's pretty closely on this topic.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself.

Swing at Percy Warner Park

Back in the '70s when Cain-Sloan was the store in Nashville for everything, St. Bernard Academy was still a girl's high school and Bookman had not yet moved in with Bookwoman, my family lived in the area of Nashville called Belmont-Hillsboro Neighborhood. It had been a huge adjustment uprooting and moving my brothers, sister and me to Nashville from a remote, British, colony in deepest darkest Africa, (an exaggeration of the facts, however, that is how most people we met viewed it). Our parents were diligent and resourceful and managed to create a home full of interesting and challenging opportunities. It was on one of these such Thanksgiving days that after eating more than we should have and feeling rather lethargic, my mother suggested we go out and create something that would leave the world a better place. My brothers decided to build a swing, take it to Percy Warner Park and hang it up for all to enjoy. So that is what they did. After building the swing and tying it to the roof of my brother's VW bug, we drove off to the park, arms out the windows, holding on to it for dear life. We dragged it up to a very high hill and hung it in a tree. A few people waved and called out cheerful remarks to us as we passed. Over the years I wonder how many folks have enjoyed swinging high on a hill in Percy Warner Park. What fun we had back then.

What a find! I am always looking for cosy, out of the way places to have a cup of tea or coffee and a homemade pastry. The ladies at this bake sale have figured it all out. The tables were so pretty with white table cloths and vases of flowers. Plenty of coffee was piping hot along with the smiles to go with it. Go hungry because they also have a lunch that looked really good.

Yummmm! Baklava AND chocolate!

The ladies explained that koulourakia is for dunking in coffee. Mmmm.

We were told that all of the ladies who baked the melomakarona and other goodies here have their own way of rolling them up. These melomakorona are larger than some others. Like the cookies, the ladies are all different. As it should be!

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is on Frnaklin Road in Nashville. There is construction going on, but, don't let that stop you. They are managing the traffic flow very well. Just go. It will make you smile.

Thanksgiving across the miles

Many years ago I wrote an article in Clarksville's Leaf-Chronicle about Thanksgiving. Since then many things have changed, but, my memories are still the same of my days growing up in Southern Rhodesia, now called Zimbabwe. Here is the article.

My Thanksgiving celebrations are always saturated with thoughts of my sister and brothers coming home after long semesters away at boarding school. Those thoughts had little to do with Indians and pilgrims since Southern Rhodesia hardly had any. I suppose we were the only ones for miles around (except the odd missionary) celebrating this unusual event. Along with my fathers’ traditional turkey, my mother would gather sugar cane, mangoes, passion fruit and the best concord grapes ’you’ve ever eaten’ and make a feast. My father always said she had a flair for design. She’d cut a few branches of wisteria or bougainvillea from the entrance to our house, put them together with a few pieces of fruit and ’voila’ even Ernest Hemingway would have felt at home. I guess those were the happiest Thanksgivings for me…just being together out there in ’NOWHERE'.

All I have to do is close my eyes and I can still smell the fresh bread my father baked every Saturday. The weather was always warm and we practically lived outside with every imaginable fruit or vegetable growing in the garden at our fingertips. I know my love of gardening came from the years growing up in Africa and I am thankful for having had the opportunity to experience the fun of living out of a garden with my family.

Now, when I draw a garden design, I leave a little space in it for a kitchen garden, hoping the children in the home will have an opportunity to feel some of the joy that I had digging up my dinner back in those days.

Vert-vert

The other day while reading my daughter's blog about green veggies being juiced, I was reminded of a past visit to Monet's gardens in Giverny, France. According to the guide at Giverny, Monet loved a special cake called Vert-vert. The icing is prepared with spinach. Interesting you say? And we think we started the idea of going green.

Here is the recipe for Monet's Vert-vert. This comes from the cooking journals of Claude Monet.

Vert-vert

Cake

4 eggs

3/4 cup sugar

1 cup flour

2 TBS ground pistachios

4 TBS kirsch

2 TBS unsalted butter

grated rind of lemon

Spinach Coloring

3 cups fresh spinach

Pistachio Cream

4 TBS ground pistachios

2 TBS kirsch

2 1/4 cups unsalted butter

2 tsp spinach coloring (below)

1/3 cup sugar

2 eggs

2 yolks

2 tsp flour

1 cup milk

Fondant Frosting

3 cups sugar

2 TBS white corn syrup

1 tsp spinach coloring (below)

juice of 1 lemon

First make the spinach coloring. Bring 1/2 cup water to a boil and blanch the spinach in it for a minute. Strain the liquid and pass the spinach through a sieve. This will give a green puree to color the pistachio cream and the frosting.

Preheat oven to 300. Grease an 8 in. cake pan.

To make the cake, place a saucepan over a low heat and break the eggs into it.

Beat them with the sugar until the mixture has doubled in volume.

Beat in the flour until it is completely incorporated.

Add the pistachios, kirsch, softened butter and lemon rind.

Stir well with a wooden spoon.

Pour mixture into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30 mins.

Test with a knife to see if the cake is done.

If so, remove from oven, turn it upside down on a wire rack until it cools.

To make pistachio cream combine the pistachios, kirsch and 2 TBS softened butter into a smooth paste. Color it with the spinach coloring.

In a saucepan off the heat, combine the sugar with the whole eggs and yolks.

Beat in the flour and milk, stirring constantly.

Heat this mixture over a low heat, stirring, and beat in the pistachio paste.

Remove the mixture from the heat and beat in the rest of the softened butter.

Carefully slice the cake into three equal layers.

Spread two of the rounds with the pistachio cream, then stack the layers together again. Refrigerate.

To make the fondant icing, dissolve the sugar in a heavy pan with 2 cups water.

Heat, without stirring, over high heat until the sugar dissolves and begins to boil.

Check the syrup cooking stage while boiling.

When the syrup reaches the large thread stage (when a little of the syrup is dropped in cold water it forms a large thread), add the corn syrup and the spinach coloring and remove from heat.

Lightly oil a marble work surface. Pour the syrup onto the surface and work it with a wooden spatula until it starts to become opaque. Sprinkle with lemon juice and continue working into a smooth, pale green paste.

Roll it into a ball and wrap it in a damp cloth.

Refrigerate until needed.

Roll it out with a rolling pin and use to cover the cake.

On day one of digging a trench for our holly hedge we felt a bit like Time Team. I learned long ago that by digging a trench for a hedge you encourage the plants to grow together quicker leaving no sparce areas in the foliage. If you are renovating an existing hedge, dig a trench along both sides and add organic fertilizer in the backfill. Water well.

This summer my husband and I decided to build a little shed, ( which I prefer to call a gardner's cottage) to store our tools. So we called on our local, trusty, concrete company, Mangrum's Concrete, to pour the monolithic slab as a foundation. (The actual concrete came from Williamson County Ready Mix.)

In the heat of the summer, they worked hard, long hours.

Pouring a monolithic slab which was 18" deep on the corners and 7" thick through the middle.

They built their own forms to fit the site.

And they laid wire forms and rebar for strength.

As part of a garden design, hard landscaping represents the processes other than plants. Examples are: walkways, patios, stone walls, decks, and yes, gardener's sheds.

Remember May in Tennessee? How can you forget? Many people went through incredible trauma and loss. Canoe companies were one of the small businesses that were hurt because of the flooding. However, TA DA! they are back in business and wanting to make up for lost time.
There are several canoe companies along The Harpeth that can handle your reservation so, if one is full, try another one.

On the day before the big flood, I gave my husband an anniversary gift of a canoe ride for the following day ( May 1st). Big surprise! The rest is history except to say that this many months later we took that trip down the Harpeth and it was more fun and certainly more exciting than we had expected.

Floating along coffee in hand, we turned a corner and right in front of our eyes, blocking the river, was a herd of cattle. By the time I jostled around, splashed this way and that and grabbed my camera, only three were left standing there.

This one refused to move. “Nope” he said, “I ain’t moovin”.”

The beauty was up close and personal.

Maybe you can make this happen in your busy day. We figured if we took our coffee with us it would be like a long coffee break. It took one hour from start to finish and it was a bit of a drive to get there, but, heck it’s only open through October.

Secret life of master carpenter

My brother, David, is the ultimate master carpenter any where. He has created too many beautiful things to mention on this blog. You really just have to see some for yourself. He lives in Florida with his wife, Geri ( Gigi's Fabulous Kids shop in Rosemary Beach) and their two dogs, Myrle and Goldy. David's company, Meridian Workshops , has thrived over the years as being able to produce anything a customer might want.

What most people do not know is that David is also talented in many other ways.

He LOVES gardening. On our recent visit to their NEW garden and orchard, we found a charming and delicious transformation to their back garden space.

These are some figs growing in his newly planted orchard. MMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Figs do to grow here in Middle Tennessee as well, only, winter temps. can make them die back to the ground. Some protection is needed when it goes below 10 degrees F.

David and Geri's gardener's cottage is so cute, with a pergola nearby for grapes. Their kitchen garden is chock full of basil, sage, fruit trees and asparagus among other delights.

David is trying asparagus there in Florida even though he knows it might not be successful. Asparagus requires a cold winter climate. My money is on David. I think he will find a way to make it flourish. So far it looks great!

Lemon tree very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet, but the fruit of that lemon is impossible to eat. (Sorry, I just had to sing that. I didn't, however, pen that myself.)

Cream tea anyone?

I love using this Tea Time towel when we have a cream tea because it reminds me of my daughter, Barbara, who gave it to me as a 'happy day surprise' one day.

Just before the heat wave hit Tennessee, a friend came over for tea in the garden. We enjoyed a cream tea (some scones, cream and jam). My daughter Gillian makes the best scones anywhere, and, I mean anywhere. We always use her recipe and it never fails to produce perfect scones everytime.

Gillian's Scones

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 TBS baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup chopped dried fruit (figs, currants, prunes, apricots)

1/4 cup golden raisins

1 1/4 cups heavy cream

Glaze

3 TBS butter, melted

2 TBS sugar

Preheat oven to 425degrees F. Use an ungreased baking sheet.

Combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a bowl, stirring with a fork to mix well.

Add the dried fruit and raisins.

Still using the fork, stir in the cream and mix until the dough holds together in a rough mass (the dough will be quite sticky).

Lightly flour a board and transfer the dough to it. Knead the dough 8 or 9 times.

Pat into a circle about 10 inches around.

For the glaze, spread the butter and sugar on top.

Cut the circle into 12 wedges and place each piece on the baking sheet, allowing about an inch between pieces.

Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

On my birthday this year I went outside to find what I thought were mole tracks across the lawn. At closer inspection I found that my husband was in the process of installing a watering system for our garden. The best part was that he instantly replaced the sod and you cannot even see where he dug up the lawn. I loved my birthday this year.

This morning in my garden the wren family introduced it's young to us, loud and clear.

Nasturtium

I’m thinking of a garden from my past, today. Back to our cottage in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) on a street called Shakespeare Avenue; the neighborhood was called Fairbridge Park.

I can almost smell the dahlias as I write this down. Across the lawn was a perfectly divine little pond, filled with the season’s tadpoles and eggs. The eggs were all slimy and wet. We would try to figure how many toads we would have soon. My father's voice was calm and loving as he held long stems of zinnias and marigolds across his lap. I noticed how bright all of the flowers were that he grew and how gently he held his hands when he spoke about them. I never remember being told that we couldn’t go in the garden or cut any of the flowers.

One day, an African family gave my father a lamb as payment for his services. We named her Nasturtium because she constantly ate them from the garden. Nasturtium disappeared, only to return on our dinner plate months later (to our horror).

I remember the day she first ate the nasturtiums and I waited to see what my father would say when he came outside. All he said was,” C’est la vie!” (That’s life!). It occurs to me at this moment that it was he who opened my heart to what a garden can do for my soul. It’s a place I can feel free.

He would save every banana peel and every eggshell for the compost pile. We learned how to love the garden because he allowed us to be ourselves in it. Snapdragons made great finger puppets and the pond, on cleaning day, was better than the swanky pool downtown. We’d wear our skivvies (underwear) and find all sorts of new creatures. Life was good!

He said nasturtiums were his favorite. I’ll never forget the way they looked, all orange and yellow, filling every crack of the garden by the stairs. The strong scent of nasturtiums combined with the red wax of the stairs will never leave my memory, and to this day, 40 years later, it brings me back home to a garden I have loved all my life, in Southern Rhodesia, in Fairbridge Park, on Shakespeare Avenue.

Tomato Food

I got a few responses to my last post about Plupy Douglas and his remedies, and, yes there is one for clematis leaves turning yellow.

One thing that Plupy always said in response to most any question was, tomato food. Actually that is not quite right. Plupy would have said, " Feed it tamayta food." It wouldn't matter if you asked about flowers that wouldn't bloom, clematis that had yellow leaves or hydrangeas that were the wrong color, the answer was always the same.

Magnesium is often lacking if leaves on clematis are turning yellow so make sure that the tomato food you are using as a remedy includes magnesium. Another remedy for this yellowing condition is 1 teaspoon of epsom salt to 1 gallon of water.

Many years ago my father had a friend called Geddes who knew everything there was to know about gardens and plants and , well, really a whole lot about everything. I remember going with Dad to Geddes Douglas Garden Center ( which was on the corner of Estes and Hobbs, hard to believe, but true. Now you KNOW I am old. ) I would listen to them go on and on about the tiniest things; things like bottom end rot and fusarium wilt. They would even get enthusiastic about such things. What a great time they always had together. What I wouldn't do to hear them laugh like that again.

Over the years, Geddes Douglas and my father shared remedies, stories and most of all, friendship. His son, Plupy, became a friend of mine and we carried on the tradition. The following is a recipe to help revive mature magnolias. Not having the luxury anymore to ask Plupy, I will go out on a limb and suggest that it will also work to aid magnolias that have been through our recent flood.

Plupy Douglas's Magnolia Remedy

40 lbs. green sand

20 lbs. superphosphate

20 lbs. cottonseed meal

1 cubic yard / pine fines

Work in all ingredients and water well. Water frequently throughout the dry, hot summer.

Rhubarb Pie

This is my mother -in-law, Daisy, up in Canada, demonstrating how to pick rhubarb. She is an expert at growing, picking and baking rhubarb pie. I must clarify that Daisy is a Devonshire girl who has lived some of her adult life in Canada, but, her heart still belongs in Devon, England.

As Garrison Keillor often sings on NPR Prairie Home Companion, " Be-bop-a-rebop rhubarb pie." Click on title to see him sing a version with Meryl Streep. And if you haven't done already, it is time to pick some now in your garden.

If this is your first time to grow your own, it likes to be planted here in Middle TN in a cooler part of the garden. Morning sun/afternoon shade is perfect. Near the compost pile is good, that's where my father grew his because rhubarb is a heavy feeder. When the stalks look like the ones above, just pull the stalks out gently. Cut the leaves off the stalks and lay them around the base of the plant. Do not eat the leaves as they are poisonous and will give you the go-bodily-squinch. Not pleasant.

Rhubarb pie is my favorite pie in the whole world. It is easy to prepare. Here is the recipe my father always used. It comes straight from Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer. * Easy peasy as we always say.

This assumes that you have a recipe for flaky crust or use a pre-made one.

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Pre-bake a bottom crust for 10 minutes.

Without peeling, cut into 1 inch lengths:

1 3/4 to 2 pounds rhubarb stalks

Measure 5 cups and combine with:

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

Grated zest of 1 orange

1/4 teaspoon salt

Let stand for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Pour into the pre-baked, bottom crust and dot with:

2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Brush the overhanging crust with cold water.

Cover with the top crust or lattice, then seal the edge, trim and crimp.

If using a closed top crust, cut steam vents or use a pie bird.

Lightly brush the top of the pie with:

Milk or cream

Sprinkle with:

2 teaspoons of sugar

Bake the pie for 30 minutes.

Slip a baking sheet beneath it, reduce the oven temp.to 350 degrees F, and bake until thick juices bubble through the vents, 25 minutes to 35 minutes more.

Let cool completely on a rack before serving.

This pie is best eaten on the day it is baked. It can be stores at room temp. for up to 1 day.

* Easy peasy is a term used often by Rhodesians.

Brentwood TN Gardens Get Snowed In!

If you haven't heard about Emma yet, you will. (She emmigrated from Cornwall, England to move to a warmer climate.) This was Emma's first snow. She has lived in Brentwood on and off for 8 years and has never experienced this. The plants , by the way, are loving the blanket of snow covering their roots. AHHH, enjoy it while you can, Emma. This is not normal for Brentwood.

How is this for close to the kitchen.

These photo were taken on a recent visit to the river towns in the Zhejiang Province just South of Shanghai, China. Every available space along the road and outside the house is used for growing food.

I was especially fascinated by the pruning methods. Many of the trees and shrubs are varieties grown right here in Middle Tennessee. The Chinese style of pruning gives their garden design a comletely different feel.

Old Windows from a Friend

Recently,a friend was replacing her windows and offered them to us. She knew that Luke was planning to build a cold frame with Gillian and needed two small-ish windows for the top. As soon as we got the call we dashed off to pick them up, carried them off to Charleston and voila!

Mother's Day in Provence

What a wonderul day we had this year on Mother's Day. Gillian and Barbara drove home from Charleston and Jack was here having freshly graduated from MTSU. We had a lot to celebrate and we spent it in the portion of our back garden we call 'Provence'. This year my husband built a fence complete with trellis and grapevines and together we created a cosy garden for sipping hot cups of coffee in the morning and sundowners in the evening. Today we shared lunch and stories with family.

I can't remember being at a loss for words before. As you know, the same post of Jack going to Rwanda has been on my blog since August, with no new posts following it. Strange, you say? Having a blog about gardening and a lone, unrelated, post stands alone for months with no updates? I can't explain it except to say that Jack going to Rwanda made me stop, period. Today I received this photo from Jack. He jump-started me again. Here is Jack's first garden EVER and it is in his garden in Rwanda. Funny, what growing fresh greens will do for your heart!

Water feature VS. Pond

Here's my contribution to the Water Features VS. Ponds issue:

It is very hard to FAKE a natural pond or waterfall…period! Don't try to fake it...it just won't look natural.
Water should be at the bottom of the hill not halfway up it.
Small ponds are harder to maintain than larger expanses of water with greater volume ( 1 acre or more) which make it easier to establish a balanced ecosystem. Having said all that, self-containing water features make a great deal of sense if you like to put your feet up and relax.

Water Features

One of my absolute favorite garden designers is John Brookes. If you haven't read his books, go right now to your local library and check them out. He makes a lot of sense and his ideas are very helpful when you are trying to design your garden space. He feels as I do about ponds that are supposed to look and feel natural ( and aren't) and he agrees that water features don't have to be elaborate to give you what you want, which is usually the SOUND of water. “The sound of water is often more important than the look of it.” John Brookes

In our hot climate the sound of water is enough to make the area around it both feel cooler and more refreshing.

The smaller the area of water the more it should be elevated or it will look like a hole in the ground. This is where a wall fountain, raised wellhead or pedestal will be perfect.

The design of the feature is important to the overall design and feel of the garden.

Scale and silhouette can create drama or a peaceful feeling.

In a very small , dark , space it can act as a mirror and bring light into the area.

Running water from a fountain can block out noise even in a small garden.

Remember that your feature will be seen in winter among bare stems. Frame your view of it with this in mind.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure that it feels the way you want it to without creating ongoing work for yourself. Ponds take an incredible amount of time and maintenance and over the longterm may not give you the relaxed feeling that you intended. Consider all options before taking the plunge. Plant Swap

Last night was our neighborhood's very first plant swap and it was such fun. Everyone joined in and brought great selections from their home gardens. We had everything from bee balm, nandinas and soloman's seal to heirloom poppies. A plant swap is a great way to share plants and save a little money in the process. Each person in attendance brings a plant they have dug out of their garden and swaps at the end of the night for one they don't have. It is also a good way to get to know your neighbors. Great fun!

Nasturtium

My daughter, Barbara, has an adorable dress on her blog today, one of her new creations for Spring. You can see her designs on her Bb blog. Her dress reminds me of a story about a nasturtium I once knew. I will tell that story another day. This day belongs to Barbara and her new dress.

A Kitchen Garden Story

A few years ago I drew a design for a lovely lady called Elaine. She was determined to have a kitchen garden that felt like the English gardens she dearly loved on her yearly visits abroad. So off we went, laying out the beds to be built, filling them with organic compost, manure and topsoil. We carefully planted all of the herbs and edibles and then, suddenly, my husband and I moved to Russia for 3 years. Elaine was on her own to tend her new garden. I was very pleased to see how well Elaine carefully and diligently followed our plan while I was away. She is now a confident gardener.

The design for this Kitchen Garden called for major construction.

It started by working with the existing slope by excavating only a 30' by 30' space.

After building raised beds with stone and preparing them with organic manure, peatmoss and topsoil, planting was done according to the design.

Then mulch was spread and it was up to Elaine to water and maintain...and enjoy her harvest.

As you can see in the design (below), a very simple design can create an alluring landscape. The European owners wanted to feel like they were back in Paris.
